PC is recognized as a Virtual Machine

Problem

During licensing, you get a message saying that local softlocks are not supported in virtual machines.

Cause

When licensing with local licenses, the PC (especially Microsoft Surface Books) is incorrectly recognized as a virtual machine.

Solution

If you can reliably rule out the possibility that virtualization software is being used, proceed as follows:

  1. Open the registry editor on the affected PC and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Virtual Machine\Guest\Parameters\VirtualMachineId bzw. zu HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Microsoft\Virtual Machine\Guest\Parameters\VirtualMachineId.
  2. Rename the VirtualMaschineId entry.
  3. Restart the computer.
  4. Create a new .c2v license file.
  5. Send the new license file to licensing@linear.de.
