Calculating Dynamic Cooling Load According to VDI 2078

Find out how to calculate the dynamic cooling load for your building according to VDI 2078.

A cooling load calculation is required to design air conditioning systems and cooling elements in the rooms according to demand. The calculation method in the dynamic cooling load calculation is used not only to determine the cooling load of rooms to be air-conditioned, but to the same extent to calculate room temperatures for rooms of all types, taking into account the correct wall structures. System components that influence the thermal behavior of the space, such as mechanical or natural ventilation and radiant heating or cooling, are an integral part of the calculation procedure and no longer have to be determined using approximation methods.

The range of application therefore includes the
  • Calculation of the cooling load
  • Calculation of the room air temperature
  • Calculation of the operative room temperature

for rooms of all types with and without air conditioning, taking into account all relevant parameters influencing the thermal room behavior.

Besides calculating the cooling load for a design day, the VDI 2078 calculation can also be used to calculate the heating and cooling demand for an entire year. The required climate data for the annual simulation can be downloaded free of charge for Germany.
