Creating New Element Classes

Shows step-by-step how to create a new element class in the Element classes and property sets dialog.

Before you begin

You want to create a new element class to display specifically selected properties for the elements of the class.

Navigate to:

Revit ribbonLINEAR tabAdministration: Element Classes and Property Sets

Applies to all disciplines.

Procedure

  1. Click on New Element classes in the Element classes section.

The newly created element class is shown at the end of the list with a placeholder name; the settings of the element class are displayed on the right-hand side of the dialog.

  2. Enter the desired Name and a Description.
  3. In the Disciplines area, click Select... to only display elements from selected disciplines.
  4. Select the desired disciplines and exit the dialog by clicking OK.
  5. In section Revit categories, click on Select... to display elements from specific categories.
  6. Select the desired categories and exit the Select categories dialog with OK.
  7. In the drop-down list in the Filter rules area, select whether an element must meet all criteria (AND logic) or at least one criterion (OR logic) in order to be displayed in this element class.
  8. Click on to select a parameter as a filter criterion.
  9. Click on to select a classification as a filter criterion.
Tip: Classification filters lead to an increased computing load and should therefore be used with caution. You may want to check whether a superordinate classification level instead of several specific definitions might also lead to the desired result.

Results

The element class has been created and is displayed in the properties dialog when a corresponding element is selected.

What to do next

Create property sets to display the desired properties of the elements of this class.
